A new year, a new diet??

Ok so its a new year... so what? Anything going to be different to last year or the year before that?

Well firstly, I have never written a blog before - I guess it is a bit like writing a diary except that it is an open diary to the world (assuming anyone actually wants to read this). Given that I am not one that naturally likes to express myself or share......... well this is a bit of a weird thing for me to be doing then i guess. But I am on a mission to make myself a bit more known - to myself and possibly to others.

Secondly, I have been diagnosed as being insulin resistant - and while i got started on changing my diet quite radically last year, the festive season well and truly got in the way (along with my willpower) and I am really getting cracking on getting my health back this year - so part of this blog is to help me track my thoughts.....anyone who wants to contribute along the way is welcome.

Thirdly, I love to cook. I could spend all my time playing in the kitchen given half a chance. I often resent going to work because it interferes with my experimentation in the kitchen. I am by no means a Heston Blumenthal but I do like to play with recipes and come up with new ideas. My challenge this year is to get to grips with being creative while coming up with food that is healthy, insulin resistance friendly and above all interesting.  For me that is the biggest challenge - while my diet has largely been "healthy" it has not been even vaguely appropriate for insulin resistance - ie it has been high in carbohydrates that my body cannot deal with.

So last year was a bit of an eye opener for me when it was explained to me that while I was eating tons of fruit, veg, whole grain bread, pasta etc it was not good for me as I was starving myself of protein. Now this has been a revelation as I had been trying to cut out meat and introduce a lot ore legumes, veggies etc into my diet - which generally is a good thing to do, but it meant I was eating about a third of my protein requirements. Problem is that I am not a huge carnivore.........and the sight of meat, chicken and even some fish is turning me pretty cold right now. But the alternative - protein whey powder - is leaving me even less inspired. Which leaves me with eggs, cottage cheese and a whole variety of vegetable proteins (soya, soya and soya). Hmmmmm.

Anyway with all that said, the objective of my blog for this year is to track my progress with my insulin resistance and share any thougths that I have on creative food ideas. Also given that I have really struggled to understand insulin resistance (yes I am a slow learner), as and when i figure things out I aim to share any pearls of wisdom that miraculously develop :-)

For anyone else that is insulin resistant, or even thinks that they may be, I hope this blog offers some inspiration, comfort or whatever it is that you need for it.
